Choose your path to better English: New B1 and B2 courses plus ongoing IELTS prep

Due to popular demand, starting in August, we will offer English B1 and English B2 classes as independent language courses, not anchored in the IELTS test.  Of course, if you wish to prepare for the IELTS exam, we still have you covered.  Those courses will continue to be held on Thursday evenings.

So, what can you expect in the new language courses?

Each will be centred on the indicators of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

English B1 (09027) – Monday OR Tuesday, 19.30-21.00

In this course, you’ll practise using English in real‑world situations. You’ll build your vocabulary and learn to talk and write about commonplace topics.

Through active engagement in the learning activities, you’ll gain the competence to:

  • Follow the main ideas on familiar topics you encounter at work, school or when travelling abroad
  • Produce simple and coherent texts on topics of personal interest
  • Describe events, experiences and aspirations, giving reasons for your stances

These abilities reflect the core of B1 competence, and the course offers a clear path for developing them.

English B2 (09029) – Wednesdays 19.30-21.00

In this course, you’ll learn to use English in more complex and nuanced contexts. You’ll practise discussing abstract ideas, reading longer texts and expressing your viewpoints with clarity and concision.

Through active engagement in the learning activities, you’ll gain the competence to:

  • Relate the main ideas of complex texts — including technical discussions in your field of specialisation
  • Interact spontaneously and fluently with other English speakers
  • Produce clear, detailed writing on a wide range of subjects, including expressing advantages and disadvantages

These are the hallmarks of B2 competence, and the course is designed to help you move steadily toward them.

IELTS Preparation course (09030) – Thursdays 17.30-19.00 OR 19.30-21.00

In this course, you’ll develop the targeted skills needed to perform confidently across all four components of the IELTS exam. You’ll practise working with complex input, expressing yourself with precision, and managing the specific task types you’ll encounter on test day.

Through active engagement in the learning activities, you’ll gain the competence to:

  • Identify and extract detailed information from spoken texts such as interviews, discussions and academic talks
  • Analyse and evaluate ideas in long texts, including arguments, viewpoints and supporting evidence
  • Produce clear, well‑structured written responses for both Task 1 and Task 2, including describing data, outlining processes and presenting reasoned positions
  • Speak fluently and coherently on a range of topics, expanding on your ideas and supporting them with relevant examples

These skills align with the demands of the IELTS exam, and the course supports you in working toward your target band score.
