January Highlights in the English Café

The year 2023 is off to a good start in our Zoom-based English Café.

Past participles

Make a date with us for a virtual trip to West Africa, on Monday 16 January from 17.00 to 18.00 when Historian Dr Adrian Jitschin will discuss his upcoming publication “African Processes of Civilisation”. The book features heretofore unpublished essays by the German academic Prof Norbert Elias who worked at the University of Ghana in 1962, five years after the nation gained its independence.  You can also ask Dr Jitschin about how history is written, the various methods that scholars use and why this discipline matters.

When he isn’t digging up the past, Dr Jitschin manages the FernUniversität in Hagen’s Frankfurt Campus.

Future perfect

On Monday 23 January from 17.00 to 18.00 Kerstin Langhein of the International Office will visit the English Café to talk about studying abroad.  What options are there for FernUni students with a bout of academic wanderlust?  Can you transfer any credit points you earn whilst enrolled abroad?  And, how might you get your hands on an Erasmus or Promos scholarship to cover the costs?  Log in and learn about how to enhance your study programme with a stint overseas.  Langhein will be happy to answer all your questions in this regard.

For more information on what the International Office offers, visit their website here.
