Cross border delights and new ways to learn: Sebastian Lauritz will give us a pan-European perspective

Monday 28 April
Sebastian Lauritz
OpenEU
Academic Sebastian Lauritz  oversees the FernUniversität’s component of the Open European University.  He will tell us all about the OpenEU, a multi-million Euro initiative that will strengthen and transform research, teaching and learning in the European Higher Education Area in the coming months and years.

Monday 12 May
Dr Adrian Jitschin
A Climate of Civilisation
We are happy to be welcoming back the head of the FernUniversität’s Frankfurt campus, Dr Adrian Jitschin. His lecture will address the ongoing socio-environmental crisis, a call for cooperative action against climate change, biodiversity loss, land use, soil loss and degradation, pollution and ecological overshoot. Although the impacts affect us globally, the solutions remain very inconsistent worldwide. While there are major climate negotiations between nations, local efforts, including climate protests, are trying to influence civil society discourses. Dr Jitschin himself is undecided about what a solution-oriented approach could look like. However, he is willing to explore various methods in collaboration and would like to discuss this with the participants in the panel.

Don’t miss our guest lecture this semester

Monday 26 May
Dr Ines Karin Böhner
Intercultural Dimensions
Dr Ines Karin Böhner, co-author of English for Science and Technology (Hanser, 2024) is an accomplished academic based at the University of Stuttgart’s Language Centre. She specialises in intercultural communication and English for specific professional fields, including marketing, media studies, architecture and project management. Speaking of her upcoming lecture at The English Café, she says, “People from different cultures may speak the same language (i.e. English), yet communication may still break down. Misunderstandings often arise when people interpret messages differently, which is why the ability to read a situation and decipher communication styles becomes key.”
